Bulletstorm 2011 RePack by RG Mechanics

I do not have words to describe how much I had waited for a game like Bulletstorm. I mean, my though was "People Can Fly couldn't miss it", and I wasn't wrong. Not a little.

Why? Because all is here: blood, violence, frenetic action, great weapons, amazing characters, voices and music with an amazing level design in one of the best engines ever made. The result couldn't be more fun.

Even the history don't being that bad, it will give us all the reasons to just shoot almost everything that moves in the screen. Grayson is a squad leader that works for The Confederation, under direct orders from General Sarrano. But, after discover that Sarrano was using Grays's Dead Echo squad to clean his own dirty, Gray just disagree with all that and flee with his unit.

The game starts some few years later where Dead Echo became some kind of space pirates, piling any Confederation ship at their reach. Hunted by many, his head is already worthing half a billion. So, after kill the third headhunter inside of his spaceship in the same week, Sarrano's spaceship, Ulysses, appear in front of them and, after some action, both ships fall in a weird planet called Stygia.

Surviving the fall (don't ask me how), Gray will discover that Stygia is a really weird planet and that there's a lot of bad things lurking in the surface and its underground. Being followed by his friend and partner Ishi, they will try to reach Sarrano and use him to flee from the ruined planet and, at the same time, achieve revenge.

Have I mentioned that Gray looks A LOT with the Wolverine from the X-Man movies?

Continuing… So, the history isn't THAT bad. It can make us laugh a lot and definitely will give us fun through all the game. Not the history by itself, but, in the huge mix, it will make sense and, like I said, will give us all the reasons to the bloodbath.

Stygia is a ruined planet, a long lost colonization city that was abandoned because of experiments that had failed and, delivered to high levels of radiation, mutated humans started to habit the planet. In total, we have three different races of mutated humans, each with its own sub-classes that will change the challenge in different moments.

Bulletstorm should gain a medal for make so good looking animations. Not only that, but the AI is decent, being different and well balanced for each type of mutant and classes.

With a fast pace, the action will always be present, with little times to breath, reload, get ammunition, and change weapons and so on. To do all this, in the middle of the levels, Gray will find drop-kits projected for the Leash and, through it, he can acquire do all that above using skill-points.

And how get skillpoints? Easy. Before the real action begins, Gray will equip the called Leash, some kind of advanced weapon that have the function that named it - grab things and enemies, and, after pick it, it will start to analyze the user combat and, most skilled is the kill, more skillpoints will be gained. But nothing from otherworld, since after pick the leash, we gain access to a list of all the skillshots available.

Not only using the Leash, but a combination of all the tools that Gray can use to be a killing machine. So, we already have the Leash and the guns more one heck of a powerful kick and a sliding maneuver. All these possibilities can be combined to give all sorts of pain and death to our unlucky enemies. More that each weapon has a secondary fire mode more a charged attack, meaning a lot of funny ways to dismember, smash, explode, drop, destroy, shoot, drill, tie, hammer, trip and even transform an enemy in plant food.

Must say that Bulletstorm own an amazing soundtrack. Not only about music, but everything about sound effects is amazing, including the voices.

Now, mix that with that top about the so called "one of the best engines ever made" (aka Unreal Engine 3) and we get an amazing looking good game. Even being to linear, is hard to not feel the hugeness of the scenarios in the background. Also, gorgeous textures just give a new impressive level of detail to it. Of course that all this beauty has a cost but, for being so well made, it's easy to find a good balance between graphics and performance without lost all the fun.

Unfortunately, after finish the Single Player campaign, the game does little to catch the player, meaning a low level of replay value for a game full of arcade characteristics. Echoes mode can deliver a fast fun for who just want to remember the frenetic action, instead play all the game again, even when this last option it worth the try two or three times.

Looking to all this, is easy to see that Bulletstorm delivers what promised, a lot of fun. Even short and with a desirable replay value, the fast pace and gameplay is the strongest point while history can disappoint, with many "clichés", predictable but intense at the same time. It's easily recommended for any fan of FPS games and a good recommendation for newcomers of the genre or for who is just searching fun (a lot of it!).

Warhammer 40.000: Space Marine Retail

Year: 2011
Developer: Relic Entertainment
Publisher: THQ Inc.
PC
English
7.62 GB
Genre: RPG (Rogue / Action) / 3D / 3rd Person
Warhammer 40.000: Space Marine Retail (PC/2011)

The Space Marines are designed to be the pinnacle of human evolution. They are living weapons of war built to serve the immortal god-emperor of mankind. They are also superstitious, genocidal maniacs who would see humankind stand alone in a dead universe. The game Space Marine, developed by Relic Entertainment (Dawn of War II), puts a handful of these immortal warriors to work defending a planet overrun by Orks and the legions of Chaos. It also switches genres from Relic's traditional real-time strategy setup to a third-person shooter. After spending a few hours besting the enemies of man, we're ready to give you a rundown on the weapons you'll encounter in the game.
- Bolter
- Chainsword
- Heavy Bolter
- Stalker Pattern Bolter
- Power Axe
- Lascannon
- Plasma Pistol
- Meltagun
- Thunder Hammer
- Adeptus Mechanicus Vengeance Launcher
- Jump Pack

Your total arsenal in Space Marine can include a pistol, bolter, two other ranged weapons, and one melee weapon. We also ran across the plasma cannon, the storm bolter, frag grenades, and an iron halo, but we'll let you discover the quirks of those items yourself. Sadly, some of the iconic melee weapons, such as the power sword and the power fist, didn't make an appearance during our time in the single-player game. We think at least one of this pair will make an appearance in the game.

The game's multiplayer is based on eight-versus-eight online team combat, pitting good-guy Space Marines against traitorous Chaos Marines. You progress through 41 levels, flitting between three classes and murdering your way across five maps in two modes: Annihilation, a first-to-41-kills frag match, and Seize Ground, in which teams fight to capture and hold map control points. Though two multiplayer modes and five maps seem an undersized offering, we're told to expect further maps as downloadable content (some free, some paid-for), and there is compensation in the breadth of character progression, by means of a stream of unlockable weapons, perks, and cosmetic customisation options.

The three Space Marine classes are assault, tactical, and devastator. Tactical is the most versatile breed, with eventual access to the most weapon types. Devastator is the heavy-weapons guy: a lumbering, walking turret who can plant himself on the spot, forfeiting all mobility for a higher rate of fire. But assault class (known as raptor class on the Chaos Marine side) is our favourite so far. This is the most mobile, melee-focused of the bunch, specialising in up-close brutality with the iconic chainsword, for instance, as well as the mammoth power axe. Assault class marines also come equipped with jump packs: short-burst jetpacks that let you jump high and glide down--or crash down hard, with a disruptive area-of-effect stomp attack. In our time with the game, we had the most fun ground-stomping from on high into small knots of marines and then clubbing away with a bulky melee weapon.

With the exception of the story mode's cinematic execution moves and the class-specific abilities in multiplayer, the control schemes in single- and multiplayer closely resemble each other, including the ramming sprint attack for quickly charging into a fray. A character's health comes in the shape of a slowly regenerating life bar and a separate energy shield with a quicker recharge time.

The multiplayer maps are inspired by locations from the story campaign, combining grim and gothic aesthetics with heavy industrial, battle-shredded scenery. One map is set across a partially wrecked bridge, cluttered with debris; another moves you belowground, into a network of gloomy concrete vaults. Hab Center takes in the ruins of the factory planet's residential district. Basilica and Manefactorum, meanwhile, feature cathedral-like factory buildings and more open areas. The mix of open, outdoor areas and confined spaces with low ceilings and overhangs tasks you with playing to your class's strength; jump packs are all but useless in cramped interiors but are handy for hopping to higher ground outdoors, and devastators do well finding a defensible spot from which to rain down fire on a choke point.

Horde of bloodthirsty orcs invaded the planet, a forge, which produces combat vehicles for the Imperium of Mankind. Space Marines, battle-hardened veteran of the Order of the Ultramarines Captain Titus and his party must keep the defense before the arrival of the Imperial Navy strike force. With the enemy - a huge advantage in numbers on the side of people - the best fighters and most powerful weapon. The loss of the planet will give into the hands of the Orc weapon that can be washed to the ground entire towns. Defeat would not be justified, and Space Marines ready to fight to the death, but something even more evil and terrifying is hiding in the shadows of this world.

Features:
* An epic and brutal action / RPG, where you don the armor of Space Marine and down against the superior forces repeatedly Orcs and Chaos.
* Burn the heretic, kill the mutant, pursue evil. Rushes into the thick of battle. We are not sit behind cover, we're going to attack!

Dead Island Retail (PC/2011)

After all the hype surrounding it earlier this year, Techland's zombie survival game Dead Island is fast approaching its planned September release. We had the opportunity to sample its multiplayer components back at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, but now we've spent some time with the game's single-player storyline and got to experience what it's like to deal with the zombie apocalypse surrounded by a group of sissies. For starters, though there are four different characters you can choose from, the initial story is the same regardless of which one you choose. You'll begin with a prologue, which gets you familiar with the basic controls and movement and puts you in a brief combat situation.

Combat is heavily focused on melee attacks. Available weapons are not easy to find, and keeping them functional can be quite a task. Wooden items break relatively quickly, while metal weapons, such as knives and wrenches, become less effective after some use. The game promises the ability to use firearms, but in the first hour of playing, the opportunity to use one was not available.

Most items can be repaired and upgraded with the right amount of money. Early on, the cost of improving smaller items doesn't break the bank, and in most cases, you can fully upgrade thanks to the fact that cash is very easy to find. Unfortunately, the first portion of the game doesn't give you the opportunity to create new weapons, so that aspect of the weaponry was not experienced.

There also wasn't much of a difference between the four characters in regard to their abilities. The one specializing in firearms didn't even have the opportunity to get hold of one. Also, these characters, including the football player, lose their stamina very quickly in the beginning. As you progress and level up, they do improve, but early on, you will have more luck in "hit-and-running" rather than attacking head-on.

After completing the brief prologue and meeting the first group of non-player characters, your initial task is recovering an ID card that opens up the lifeguard station. Once there, you'll face off against some zombies, and once the area is secure, it becomes your early base of operation. For an open-world game, the opening sections are extremely restrictive; the first missions are limited, but thankfully quite short in length. Once you do secure the location, multiple mission types become available, and the island becomes yours to discover.

Even with the limitations for this preview, there is a lot available to discover. Missions themselves are what you'd expect: recover items, find people, and defeat as many zombies as possible. You can accept all missions or just follow the core storyline and progress that way. Considering there is a very robust leveling system in place, the best course of action is to take on as many missions as possible.

Vehicles are also available if you can find one in drivable condition. You can either complete an early mission that makes one available to you, or you can search for one on your own. With this early look, the driving wasn't that enjoyable and took a bit of time to get used to. Thankfully, though, the car can take quite a beating; even when we launched one off a cliff, it was still very drivable.

We played with each character for an hour, and it seems that Dead Island will be much more appealing to play with a group of people rather than on your own. Early cutscenes show the four together, but when you're playing solo, the three other characters don't fight alongside you. Also, since there is no evidence of there being any differences in the story, you may be more inclined to play through a single story rather than seeing four potentially different tales. Hopefully as the in-game story progresses, more individuality is introduced to each, especially since each character seems to have a reason for being on the island. Dead Island is scheduled for release in September, so we will just have to wait to learn more.

The island of Banoi is a lush, tropical paradise in the South Pacific where its flagship Royal Palms Resort serves as the ultimate getaway for vacationers with money to burn. However, all good things must soon come to an end – and the picturesque resort falls into madness, carnage and chaos after a mysterious and contagious zombie outbreak claims its once peaceful atmosphere. Cut off from the rest of the world, only four individuals who strangely find themselves immune to zombification have the power to protect the remaining survivors from the horrors of the island, to discover what’s really going on and find a way to escape before their own fatal ends.
